2SLGBTQIA+ Mentorship Program

The Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians (CAEP) is launching its inaugural 2SLGBTQIA+ mentorship program. This program pairs EM-interested medical students, residents, and EM docs to promote mentorship!

Meetings will likely occur mainly via telephone, Zoom/Teams given the ongoing pandemic. From there, there is no specific agenda. The purpose of the program is to create a safe, informal environment where learners can learn about EM from someone further along in the process while gaining insights specifically from within the community or from strong allies.

Some of the things mentor-mentee pairs may discuss are:

  • The lifestyle of EM
  • The career options available to an emergency physician
  • Conducting research in EM
  • Comparing and contrasting CCFP EM vs. FRCPC EM
  • Helping connect the student with residents/staff where s/he is planning to do an elective
  • The specific challenges and experiences of medical trainees within our community

If you are interested in this program, please complete the following survey to allow us to match you:

(Resident or Attending Physicians)

Please note that demand for this program frequently exceeds the availability of mentors. You need to be a CAEP member to participate. While we will do our best to match all interested medical students and residents with a mentor, those who return the survey earliest will receive priority. In the past we have had issues where mentees were matched and did not contact their mentor, which is a large lost opportunity for students. If you are matched, please know you are committed to reach out to your mentor that has dedicated their time to chat with you! This program will give back as much as you put into it!

If you have any questions about the program, please contact Dr. Alex Coutin, the CAEP 2SLGBTQIA+ Committee Representative at alexandrejscoutin@gmail.com.

Enjoy!
