PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
- To design and implement innovative programing to support EM leaders in a variety of formal and informal leadership roles, including rural settings, at any phase of their careers.
- To develop a community of practice for leadership skill development, mentorship and networking for EM leaders
PROGRAM FORMAT
The CAEP Virtual Leadership Series is designed to implement innovative programming with four 90-minute sessions scheduled weekly for four weeks. Attendees will need to subscribe to the series, and each session will build on the previous session to build the CAEP leadership network, and encourage trust and knowledge exchange among both the participants and the faculty. Some pre-reading may be required.

Session 3: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion – Practical Strategies for an ED leader

Session 3 Objectives
By the end of this session, the participant will be able to:
1 – Update their knowledge of terms and definitions relevant to sexual orientation and gender minority persons
2 – View sexual orientation and gender minority issues in emergency medicine through an intersectional lens
3 – Develop a framework for implementing relevant cultural dexterity training in their settings
4 – Understand existing best practices, benefits, harms, facilitators and barriers of routine sociodemographic variable collection in the emergency department
5 – Consider opportunities to integrate sexual orientation and gender minority advocacy services into their own practice settings
Session 4: Violence in the ED – Resilience and Retention of Physicians and Staff
This will be a discussion based session with an expectation that participants consider the current environment that they work in and that they will come with ideas that have worked, not worked or they would like to try in their own workplace.

Rodrick Lim

Dr. Rodrick Lim is the Medical Director / Division Chief for the Paediatric Emergency department in London Ontario. He is an Associate Professor of Paediatrics & Emergency Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. Rod is currently the chairperson for the Wellness Committee and Leadership section at CAEP. He is looking forward to sharing his passion in the areas of Wellness, Resilience, and Advocacy through his involvement with the wellness community especially during this past year.
Brendan Carr
Keynote Speaker – Session #1 – EM Leadership in the Health System – Why it Matters
Brendan received his MD at Dalhousie after completing his MBA and went on to do a combined residency in Family and Emergency Medicine at the University of Ottawa. He has held many clinical and administrative leadership roles throughout his career, has acted as an international healthcare consultant and has served as a director of CADTH, CSPL, CARMS and HealthCareCan.
Most recently, Brendan served as the President & CEO of the Nova Scotia Health Authority providing integrated health services to approximately one million people and overseeing an annual budget of over $2.4 Billion. Formerly, he served as President & CEO of the William Osler Health System providing health services to over 1.3 million people in Greater Toronto, Ontario, and as President & CEO of the Vancouver Island Health Authority serving over 750,000 people in British Columbia.
Brendan currently serves as President and Chief Medical Officer of Innoneo Health Enterprises an organization committed to promoting health and delivering health services through an innovative ecosystem model that addresses provider fatigue, service fragmentation, disconnected information and affordability.
Judy Morris
Host – Session #2 – Servant Leadership
Dr. Judy Morris is an emergency physician and trauma team leader at Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal. She did her medical school at McGill University and did her FRCP training at Université de Montréal where she then completed a master’s degree in Clinical Research. She is the president of l’Association des médecins d’urgence du Québec (AMUQ) since 2020. She is also AMUQ’s representative on CAEP’s Board of Directors. Dr. Morris is an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine at the Université de Montréal where she serves as Assistant Director of her university department since 2018.

Jim Christenson
Speaker – Session #2 – Servant Leadership
Dr. Christenson was a practicing emergency physician in Vancouver for close to 40 years and is a Professor at the University of British Columbia. He is a clinician scientist and co-leads the BC Resuscitation Research Collaborative (RESURECT) in the Center for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences at Providence Health Care Research Institute. He has played leadership roles in emergency medicine in BC including with BC Emergency Health Services (5 years), as Head of the UBC Department of Emergency Medicine (10 Years), and as current Executive Medical Lead of the BC Emergency Medicine Network (5 Years). The EMN supports emergency care providers to deliver exceptional emergency care, everywhere.
Joan Cheng
Speaker: Session 2 -Servant Leadership
Joan Cheng is the Chief of Emergency Medicine at St. Joseph’s Health Centre – Unity Health. She has practiced both Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine in a variety of settings, ranging from a rural community to an academic centre, but the majority of her practice has been spent practicing Emergency Medicine in the community setting.
In terms of leadership roles, Joan is the Chair of the Council of Medical Leaders at St. Joe’s. Previously, she was the inaugural Director of Medical Education at Markham Stouffville Hospital. She is fortunate to be able to work on issues that align with her values, including peer support and anti-racism and anti-oppression.

Murdoch Leeies
Speaker – Session 3 – Equity, Diversity and Inclusion – Practical Strategies for an ED Leader
Dr. Murdoch Leeies works clinically in Manitoba as an emergency medicine, critical care medicine and organ donation specialist physician. Dr. Leeies is trained in clinical epidemiology and is the Research Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Leeies is leading a collaborative program of research with a focus on the promotion of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in emergency medicine, critical care medicine and organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Canada.
In addition to research Dr. Leeies is an advocate for health equity in his clinical and academic spheres. He chairs interdisciplinary committees on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Section of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Manitoba, Chairs the Sexual and Gender Minorities Committee for the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians and is the Director of EDI for the Canadian Critical Care Society.
Current areas of active research include the promotion of equity for sexual orientation and gender identity diverse patients in emergency medicine and the disruption of racism in emergency departments
Jennifer Bryan
Speaker – Session 3 – Equity, Diversity and Inclusion – Practical Strategies for an ED Leader
Dr. Bryan is an emergency physician at the University Health Network in Toronto. She is the Director of Operations of the Toronto Addis Ababa Academic Collaboration in Emergency Medicine (TAAAC-EM) and an Assistant Professor in the Division of Emergency Medicine at the University of Toronto. She is a founding member of the University Health Network emergency department sickle cell working group and is the lead of the upcoming CAEP2021 panel on Antiracism and Anticolonialism in emergency medicine.
James Stempien
Host – Session 4 – Violence in the ED
Dr James Stempien, is the Provincial Head of Emergency Medicine for the Saskatchewan Health Authority. He is a clinical Associate professor at in Emergency medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. Prior to moving to Saskatoon he spent years workings as a GP-Anaesthetist in Canada’s north and spent time working internationally, including, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Kenya, and the Middle East.
He is a candidate for the Master of Arts in Health Leadership through Royal Roads University and has a great interest in physician wellness and quality of care. He lives on an acreage with a variety of chickens, ducks and other animals and keeps 4 hives of bees.
Carolyn Snider
Speaker – Session 4 – Violence in the ED
Dr. Carolyn Snider is the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Unity Health Toronto – St. Michael’s Hospital. Dr. Snider’s research focuses on the development, implementation and evaluation of interventions for marginalized and under-served populations. Importantly, Dr. Snider harmonizes her work with a full life outside the hospital and university. She is a very happy mother, wife, traveler, singer, and cook.
Orla Smith

Constance LeBlanc
Dr. Constance LeBlanc is a staff Emergency Physician, and Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada. She holds a Master of Arts in Education and has over three decades of clinical experience in tertiary care and in community Emergency Medicine. Her commitment to ED education and how we can impact patient care through education underscores all of her work.
Connie has serves as UGME, PGME and Program Director for Emergency Medicine at Dalhousie University, chair for CPD for CAEP and chaired the Emerge cy Medicine examination committee for a decade. She welcomes learners across the continuum of medical education from undergraduates to practicing physicians.

Rob Primavesi
Dr. Robert Primavesi is an Emergency Physician at the McGill University Health Centre, Associate Chair Education for the Department of Emergency Medicine at McGill University, an Executive Member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ Committee, and a member of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group to the CAEP Board. In his spare time, Rob is an avid traveller, adventurer and whitewater rafting guide.
Eric Clark
Eric Clark, BSc, MD, FRCPC finished medical school and emergency medicine residency at Queen’s University. He then completed a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Dr. Clark has been working at the Ottawa Hospital since 2000 as an emergency physician and was Director of Faculty Development from 2006-2015 and has been Deputy Head, Department of EM, University of Ottawa: Clinical performance and operators since 2015. He was a member of the FRCPC exam board from 2006 until 2014 and served as the chair from 2009 until 2014 and held the position of Co-Chair with Kuwait Emergency Medicine Exam Board from 2015-2018. In 2020, Dr. Clark became CAEP’s CPD Chair.
