Faculty

Brian Fuller MD, MSCI

Moderator

Brian Fuller is currently a Professor of Critical Care Medicine and Emergency Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine in the United States.

As a clinical outcomes researcher, Dr. Fuller’s primary research interest is in the conduct of pragmatic clinical trials aimed at improving outcomes for patients with respiratory failure along the ED-to-ICU continuum. His research focuses on studying interventions, such as lung-protective ventilation and sedation management, traditionally reserved for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to a more proximal time window in presentation (i.e. the Emergency Department [ED]). His team is currently conducting the ED-AWARENESS-2 Trial, which will enroll >3,000 patients and aims to test the hypothesis that using succinylcholine as the default neuromuscular blocker of choice (instead of rocuronium) will reduce the proportion of patients experiencing awareness with paralysis.

Ben Forestell MD

Speaker

Dr. Ben Forestell is an Emergency Medicine physician who is also completing a fellowship in Adult Critical Care Medicine at McMaster University. He practices clinically in the Emergency Department at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and in the Critical Care Unit at Brantford General Hospital. His academic and research interests center on resuscitation and cardiac arrest care, with a focus on optimizing outcomes for critically ill and post–cardiac arrest patients.

Sameer Sharif MD, MSc, FRCPC, DRCPSC

Speaker

Dr. Sameer Sharif is an Emergency Physician and Intensivist at Hamilton Health Sciences. He is an Assistant Professor, Clinician Educator, and Researcher at McMaster University with a focus on resuscitation and sedation research in the Emergency Department and ICU. He is also the Chair of the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians Critical Care Committee and is a Methodologist on numerous Critical Care & Emergency Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines.

Steven Skitch MD, PhD, FRCPC

Speaker

Dr. Steven Skitch, MD PhD FRCPC, is the Chief and Medical Director of Critical Care Medicine at Joseph Brant Hospital. He is a dual-trained Emergency Medicine and Critical Care physician who continues to practice clinically in both disciplines, with a particular focus on the resuscitation, sedation, and ventilatory management of critically ill patients in the emergency department and ICU.

Dr. Skitch completed medical school at the University of British Columbia, followed by residency training in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Medicine at McMaster University. He also holds a PhD in Psychology from McGill University and advanced certification in point-of-care ultrasound, which he routinely integrates into bedside decision-making during high-acuity resuscitation.

Prior to his current leadership role, Dr. Skitch practiced as an Emergency Physician, Intensivist, and Trauma Team Leader at Hamilton Health Sciences and Joseph Brant Hospital. He has led multiple quality-improvement initiatives focused on early critical illness recognition, trauma care pathways, and safer transitions from the ED to the ICU—work that directly informs best practices in ED sedation, airway management, and early ventilation strategies.

Dr. Skitch is an active educator and Clinical Assistant Professor at McMaster University, where he has received multiple teaching awards for his work with residents and fellows. As Chief, he is committed to advancing evidence-based, patient-centred critical care while supporting the wellbeing of patients, families, and interprofessional teams across the acute care continuum.
