Giving Feedback that Sticks and Receiving it With Purpose – An Approach to Feedback Conversations

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Explore what constitutes effective verbal feedback delivery & content (Communicator)
- Briefly explore the effects of language and implicit biases within feedback (Health Advocate, Collaborator)
- Discuss the concept of ‘feedback literacy’ and how to effectively solicit and receive feedback (Leader, Collaborator)
- Equip participants with practical strategies to deliver and receive effective feedback across a range of real-life scenarios (Communicator, Professional)
Faculty

Alia Dharamsi MD, FRCPC
Dr. Alia Dharamsi is an Emergency Physician at the University Health Network in Toronto, and Assistant Professor in the Division of Emergency Medicine at the University of Toronto. She is a seasoned traveler, having worked and studied globally in New York, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and Ethiopia. As part of her training, she completed a fellowship in Helicopter Emergency Medicine Services and conducted air rescue and recovery missions as part of the Auckland Helicopter Rescue Trust in New Zealand. Her current leadership roles include Director of Simulation for the UHN Emergency Department, and President of the UHN Medical Staff Association. Dr. Dharamsi’s research interests include team training and debriefing—using simulation as a mechanism to improve patient care and provider wellness. She has delivered lectures globally, specifically on the novel team training exercises she developed for COVID-19 which were also used nationally and internationally for hospital pandemic preparedness. As a new mother, she continues to advocate for diversity and inclusion at UHN, supports staff as they blend work and life, as well as promotes a culture of wellness amongst staff in their first 5 years of practice.

Andrew K. Hall MD, FRCPC, MMEd, DRCPSC
Dr. Andrew K. Hall is the Vice-Chair Education and an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Ottawa. He also works as a Clinician Educator for the Centre for Innovation in Medical Education and is a Tier-2 Research Chair in Medical Education at the University of Ottawa. At the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada he leads the evaluation of the national implementation of Competency-By-Design. He is an award-winning educator and a leader in the areas of simulation and competency-based medical education.

Catherine Patocka FRCPC, MHPE, PhD,
Catherine Patocka, FRCPC, MHPE, PhD, is an emergency physician and Associate Professor who serves as Department Head of Emergency Medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. Her research currently focuses on performance feedback in medical practice and the application of realist methods to health professions education.

Isabella Menchetti, MD
Dr. Isabella Menchetti is a PGY5 Emergency Medicine resident in Ottawa and current simulation fellow in Toronto where she is also completing a Master’s in Medical Education. Her clinical and research interests focus on advancing high-quality feedback and communication in medical education, with additional expertise in gender equity and mentorship within emergency medicine.
