Overall Learning Objectives

This program will provide participants with knowledge and skills so that they can:

  • Identify inequities experienced by 2SLGBTQIA+ communities accessing emergency medicine care
  • Recognize existing healthcare disparities for 2SLGBTQIA+ populations
  • Describe concepts and terminology that relate to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community
  • Explain how stigmatization, intersectionality and discrimination have led to the health disparities experienced by 2SLGBTQIA+ people
  • Describe strategies that enhance their own capacity to provide affirming and inclusive care to 2SLGBTQIA+ patients and apply them in daily medical practice
  • Describe the evolution of how gender and sexuality have been classified in the DSM from DSM-I through DSM-5, and analyze the implications of these classifications on healthcare practices.
  • Identify and differentiate between different types of biases (e.g., affinity bias, confirmation bias, status quo bias) as they manifest in healthcare settings, particularly in emergency care for 2S/LGBTQIA+ patients.
  • Reflect on their own biases and recognize how these biases may influence interactions with 2S/LGBTQIA+ patients in emergency care settings.
  • Understand 2S/LGBTQIA+ health disparities and drivers, and how to address them.
  • Describe best practices for providing gender-affirming care to transgender and non-binary patients in emergency room settings, including considerations for hormone therapy and psychological support.

Module 1: 2S/LGBTQIA+ Competencies in Emergency Medicine – Highlights & Learning Objectives

This course was designed to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to proactively support 2S/LGBTQIA+ community members. As healthcare providers, this course will strengthen your capacity to care for patients from equity-denied populations, particularly in relation to mental health. This course will break down the complicated history of 2S/LGBTQIA+ people’s treatment in the field of mental health care, highlight important considerations around gender and sexuality, and provide tools to help you move forward in your own practice.

This module will take roughly 60 minutes to complete, and learners are encouraged to take breaks as needed. This module can be completed over multiple sittings. Your completed sections will be saved by the system and will be available to you when you log back in.

Module 3: Emergency Department Care for Transgender Non Binary and Gender Expansive Patients – Highlights & Learning Objectives

Welcome to Emergency Department Care for Transgender, Non-Binary and Gender Expansive Patients, a learning module developed by CBRC in partnership with the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians (CAEP).

This module explores ways to improve transgender, non-binary and gender expansive healthcare, overviewing the problematic history impacting how we provide care for these communities, and how patients’ past experiences can change how they perceive and experience medical services.

This module will take roughly 90 minutes to complete, and learners are encouraged to take breaks as needed. This module can be completed over multiple sittings. Your completed sections will be saved by the system and should be available to you when you log back in.
