High-Risk, Hard to See: Managing Hidden Trauma Threats in the ED

Learning Objectives

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Summarize evidence regarding screening, diagnosis, and management of blunt cerebrovascular injury (Medical Expert)
  2. Differentiate which patients with rib fracture are at risk of deteriorating and require closer monitoring (Scholar)
  3. Apply guidelines to understand which trauma patients with pneumothorax and hemothorax require a chest tube (Medical Expert)

Faculty

Julian Owen MD, FRCPC

Moderator

Dr. Owen is an FRCPC Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Physician. He completed his residency training at McMaster University and has worked at Hamilton Health Sciences as a Staff Physician since 2013. Dr. Owen is currently an associate clinical professor at McMaster University. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Owen has several administrative responsibilities. He currently serves as the Hamilton General Hospital Cardiovascular ICU Site Lead and the Hamilton General Hospital Emergency Department Site Lead. He is also a member of the Reserve Force of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Henry Ajzenberg MD, MHSc

Speaker

Henry Ajzenberg is an intensivist, emergency physician, and trauma team leader at Hamilton Health Sciences and Assistant Professor at McMaster University. He completed his postgraduate training in emergency medicine at the University of Toronto with an Area of Advanced Learning in Trauma. This was followed by a Critical Care fellowship at McMaster University. In 2023, he completed a Masters of Bioethics at the Joint Centre for Bioethics and is currently pursuing training in quality improvement and patient safety at the University of Toronto’s Excellence in Quality Improvement Certificate Program. He is an ATLS Instructor and loves to teach trauma resuscitation.

David Quinlan MSc, MD, FRCPC

Speaker

Dr. David Quinlan is an Emergency Physician and Trauma Team Leader at the Hamilton Health Sciences, and Associate Clinical Professor at McMaster University. He graduated medical school from the University of Toronto and completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at McMaster University with special interest in trauma care. Dr. Quinlan has enjoyed clinical outreach as an instructor in ATLS, Rural Trauma Team Development, and Stop the Bleed programs. His clinical interests include early trauma care, peri-arrest resuscitation, and education.

Steven Skitch MD PhD FRCPC

Speaker

Dr. Steven Skitch, MD PhD FRCPC, is the Chief and Medical Director of Critical Care Medicine at Joseph Brant Hospital. He is a dual-trained Emergency Medicine and Critical Care physician who continues to practice clinically in both disciplines, with a particular focus on the resuscitation, sedation, and ventilatory management of critically ill patients in the emergency department and ICU.

Dr. Skitch completed medical school at the University of British Columbia, followed by residency training in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Medicine at McMaster University. He also holds a PhD in Psychology from McGill University and advanced certification in point-of-care ultrasound, which he routinely integrates into bedside decision-making during high-acuity resuscitation.

Prior to his current leadership role, Dr. Skitch practiced as an Emergency Physician, Intensivist, and Trauma Team Leader at Hamilton Health Sciences and Joseph Brant Hospital. He has led multiple quality-improvement initiatives focused on early critical illness recognition, trauma care pathways, and safer transitions from the ED to the ICU—work that directly informs best practices in ED sedation, airway management, and early ventilation strategies.

Dr. Skitch is an active educator and Clinical Assistant Professor at McMaster University, where he has received multiple teaching awards for his work with residents and fellows. As Chief, he is committed to advancing evidence-based, patient-centred critical care while supporting the wellbeing of patients, families, and interprofessional teams across the acute care continuum.
