TRIK is a simulation-based course designed for health care providers who manage pediatric trauma patients, with a focus on the roles of team leader and team members. The course includes a mixture of simulation scenarios, group lectures and technical skills sessions for practicing procedures. The format provides healthcare providers hands-on experience in a safe and experiential learning environment.

If you are interested in hosting a TRIK course with CAEP, please contact Gail Chapman at gchapman@caep.ca.

The course includes a mixture of simulation scenarios, lectures and technical skills sessions for practicing procedures and provides healthcare providers a safe and experiential learning environment.

The course can be offered in the format that following any restrictions within the host institution/sim center while meeting the needs of the participants. The different formats are:

  • In-person course (participants and instructors are in-person in a sim center)
  • Remote simulation (all participants are remote and sim staff are in-person)
  • Remote facilitation (instructors are remote and participants are in-person)
  • Screen based sim (participants and instructors are remote)

Intended Audience

The TRIK course is suitable for emergency physicians, pediatricians, general surgeons, pediatric surgeons, family physicians, critical care physicians, emergency nurses and respiratory therapists.

Learning Outcomes

Starting from primary survey and initial resuscitation, the course takes an interactive approach to managing common and uncommon pediatric trauma cases. Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the differences between adult and child pathophysiology,
  • Conduct a primary and secondary survey for pediatric trauma cases,
  • Recognize, diagnose and manage common trauma-related pediatric injuries,
  • Recognize and consider ethical issues related to pediatric trauma,
  • Interpret diagnostic images for pediatric trauma cases, and
  • Determine the appropriate steps to prepare for the transport of a pediatric trauma patient.

Audience

We are excited to offer a one-day alternative to the standard two-day course, but we encourage you to consider your personal learning needs before making a decision.

While the one-day course will provide valuable information and hands-on experience, it is designed to deliver a condensed version of the two-day course and cannot include all the detailed information and practice scenarios covered in the longer program. This can position it to be a better refresher for experienced providers than for first-time or less experienced participants. Prior trauma training (for ex., ATLS trauma certification, rural trauma course) and/or experience with the care of the trauma patients will be important to maximise your comfort and success (for ex., primary/secondary survey, transport of patients, etc.).

We suggest you consider your prior experience with adult and paediatric trauma and your personal learning goals to help you select the TRIK course format that will best suit your needs.
