2017 Annual Award Recipients

CAEP President’s Award
Dr. Wesley Palatnick

Dr. Palatnick’s longstanding and continued contributions, including his work with numerous committees and the Board of Directors (2000 – 2009), have had a substantial impact on CAEP and emergency medicine at the local, national and international level. He has been a CAEP member for over 30 years.

Honourary Life Membership Award
Dr. Les Vertesi

Dr. Vertesi’s continued contributions, including his work developing, championing and promoting the creation of the Advanced Life Support Paramedic training in British Columbia, have had a substantial impact in emergency medicine at the local, national and international level. He is one of CAEP’s founding members, joining his colleagues in 1978 to create the voice of EM in Canada.

Dr. Helen Karounis Memorial Award for Professionalism in Emergency Medicine
Dr. Bjug Borgundvaag

Dr. Borgundvaag’s nominators describe him as “a wonderful friend, colleague, leader, mentor, researcher and teacher, but most of all, he is a kind and compassionate physician to his patients.”

Dr. Marilyn Li Pediatric EM Leadership Award
Dr. Jason Fischer

Dr. Fischers’ nominators state that just as “Dr. Li’s influence and positive impact on PEM extended well beyond the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, so we feel does Dr. Fischer’s.”

Dr. Richard Kohn Memorial Award for Mentorship in Emergency Medicine
Dr. Stephen Choi

Dr. Choi’s nominators state that “he works tirelessly to accommodate the needs of all trainees in a large residency training program, supporting them not only through the challenges of rigorous clinical training, but also personal and family struggles that they experience.”

Dr. Terry Sosnowski Memorial Teacher of the Year Award
Dr. Aaron Johnston

Dr. Johnston’s nominators describe him as “a passionate and effective teacher who shows enormous commitment to our training.”

Dr. Ian Stiell Researcher of the Year Award
Dr. Venkatesh Thiruganasambandamoorthy

Dr. Thiruganasambandamoorthy’s nominators state that “he has proven himself to be among a handful of elite investigators in the field of cardiac emergencies, syncope and pre-syncope research.”

Dr. Alan Drummond Advocacy Award
Dr. Kathryn Dong

Dr. Dong is being awarded as a result of her ongoing efforts with the Addictions Recovery and Community Health team in Edmonton, advocating for more of the most marginalized communities the healthcare system sees.

CCFP(EM) Resident Leadership Award
Dr. Christine East

Dr. East’s nominators say she “has shown exemplary leadership in her role as Co-Chief Resident, advocacy for residents, and enthusiasm for creating and circulating learning resources, in addition to other things that make her both a hard-working and well balanced resident and physician.”

FRCPC Resident Leadership Award
Dr. Ahmed Taher

Dr. Taher’s nominators state that “Ahmed has inspired, engaged, empowered and has become a role model for his peers.”

Penelope Gray-Allan Memorial CJEM Writing Award
Dr. Christine East

Dr. East was selected for her article “Moments.”

CAEP Medical Journalism Award
Mr. Tom Brodbeck, The Winnipeg Sun

Mr. Brodbeck was selected as a result of stories he has covered in the last year regarding emergency department overcrowding.
