Quality Improvement & Patient Safety (QIPS) Submission Info

Building on the success of CAEP 2018, we will have this year again an abstract track called “Quality Improvement and Patient Safety” (QIPS). This track is meant for projects that used QI methodologies (e.g., Model for Improvement, Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles, rapid iterative improvements), as opposed to research or education projects on topics relevant to quality and/or safety.

The QIPS track is designed to foster the scholarly dissemination of projects that aim to improve the care provided to patients, on a local or broader level. The focus of the projects can be any or all of the domains of healthcare quality (i.e. safety, timeliness, efficiency, efficacy, equitability, patient-centredness). Projects that have used methods from the science of quality improvement (e.g., Ishikawa or process mapping analyses, PDSA cycles, repeated data sampling, run charts) will be given higher consideration. Projects that used sound design and implementation but that were not successful (i.e. ‘negative’ projects) will still be given just as much credit, as there is tremendous value in learning from what has not worked in other similar settings.

Abstract Awards

Applicant Verification
  • In order to be considered for an abstract award, the presenting author must be a CAEP member.
  • CAEP membership is verified for potential awardees (if applicable).
  • If the CAEP membership type does not match that indicated in the application (e.g., member self-identified as a CAEP resident yet holds a faculty position at a university or college), then the abstract will be disqualified.
  • Resident award applicants must be in an EM residency program (i.e. FRCPC resident in emergency medicine or CCFP-EM resident) or in a pediatric EM fellowship program. Staff physicians, graduate students, and assistant professors are not eligible for resident awards.
  • Relevant start and stop dates (i.e., undergraduate MD, residency, fellowship, appointment at the level of assistant professor) should be included in the application, so CAEP staff can verify the eligibility for Top Medical Student, all Resident Awards, and Top New Investigator Award.
  • Applicants can specify parental or sick leaves that may extend their eligibility or alter their anticipated start and stop dates.
