The emergency department is a unique clinical environment where patients present with a wide variety of illnesses, varying levels of acuity and where there is often pressure to make clinical decisions under less than optimal conditions. As a result, emergency physicians are in a higher risk category than many other medical specialties.

This Roadshow is designed to improve physicians’ capacity to identify individual and systematic sources of error in the ED. In particular we will focus on how to avoid cognitive/affective errors that lead to delayed or missed diagnosis and how to manage ethical challenges, with the goal of improved patient safety and reduced legal risk. The Roadshow will include case-based lectures and clinical scenarios to enhance learning and clinical performance. Join us at this new and exciting CAEP Roadshow and learn from the experts in clinical decision making and ethics in emergency medicine.

By the end of this program, the learner will be able to:

• Describe specific guidelines and strategies to manage the ethical challenges frequently encountered by emergency physicians
• Demonstrate knowledge of the major antecedents of error, common diagnostic errors and their impact on patients
• Recognize principal cognitive errors that underlie diagnostic error
